The CAN Foundation presents ‘Surfer: A Solo Exhibition by Andy Harris’. The opening reception will take place on February 24 at 7:30 pm at Assembly in downtown Norfolk. The exhibition will be on view through May 4, 2024 with forthcoming programming to be announced.
‘Surfer: A Solo Exhibition by Andy Harris’, includes a new series by the artist that delves into collaged surfing imagery. The works introduce a fabled surfer reminiscent of mythical creatures like Saqsuatch and the Abominable Snowman. Through the storytelling presentation of collages and drawings, he aims to capture the elusive essence of a legendary surfer, distorting the conventional representation with a deliberately loose and free approach. Of the work the artist notes, “ I think that living in a surfing town, we’re surrounded by a saturation of surf art that often
adheres to a mainstream or commercial aesthetic. Some of it is beautiful, but it also creates this pull in me that wants to disrupt that, to challenge that beauty. I may have just needed an excuse to go a bit more raw, to rebel against the polished and predictable. I tell people I’m making ugly surfing paintings.”
Additional floors throughout Assembly will serve as a retrospective of the past 5 years of the artist’s career, including works that provide insight into the artist’s process, commentary, and curiosities over time.
