Conversations in Art: To My Best Friend from the Start, film screening and artist talk with Kendrick Hopkins and Nastassja Swift.
Join The CAN Foundation from 3-5 pm on January 28th at Assembly for ‘Conversations in Art: To My Best Friend From the Start’. The afternoon will include a film screening of WHRO Public Media’s documentary ‘To My Best Friend From The Start’, that follows artist Nastassja Swift as she creates the culminating exhibit for her time as a CAN Foundation First Patron Initiative Artist in Residence, ‘Canaan: when I read your letter, I feel your voice.’
‘Canaan: when I read your letter, I feel your voice,’ was a multi-layered installation and collaborative performance that intimately displayed the exchange between Swift and her brother, who is currently incarcerated within the Virginia Department of Corrections. Articulating feelings of absence, erasure, and the personal and communal impact of mass incarceration, Nastassja’s body of work explores her close relationship with her brother and her experience navigating his incarceration.
Following the screening, an artist talk featuring Nastassja Swift and producer Kendrick Hopkins Jr will take place. The conversation will be moderated by Asa Jackson.
Location: Assembly, 400 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA
